Expectations for Liposuction Results
It's important to have realistic expectations about liposuction results. Outcomes are age-related, and they are also related to the shape the patient is in when starting out. For example, a 26-year-old woman in reasonable form might look like a swimsuit model after liposuction. But, a 46-year-old woman, 50 pounds overweight, won't get the same results. The vast majority of liposuction patients are delighted with their results in the hands of a skilled surgeon. It's not unusual to lose one to three dress sizes (depending on the areas treated and the amount of fat that's been removed).
Part of the preparation for any cosmetic procedure involves talking to one's spouse, children, friends and other loved ones about anticipated plans, and preparing them for the "new look." People are sometimes in relationships where they are expected to be depressed and lack confidence in themselves. If they choose to make changes, it can upset a balance that's been a comfortable habit for years. This may apply to professional as well as to personal relationships. For most, with the courage to change, a new life with more self-assurance awaits.
Most people are in good enough general health to undergo liposuction, but there are some situations in which the procedure is not recommended, specifically if a patient has an unstable medical problem such as poorly controlled diabetes or heart disease. There are no known conflicts with medication other than the use of aspirin or other blood thinners or large doses of Vitamin E, all of which can lead to bleeding and a longer recovery. Patients using these medications will be asked to discontinue them for a period of time prior to liposuction.
